Urology Health Topics : National Prostate Awareness Month is September

National Prostate Awareness Month is September

Virginia Urology (VU) has a long history of providing quality care to the Greater Richmond metro area for over 70 years. We pride our self on our strong commitment to the community's urological needs. In doing so, the physicians and staff of Virginia Urology are dedicated to raising awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of early detection among the Greater Richmond community.

Last year Virginia Urology took part in the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge (GPCC), a national initiative that was in its second year. As part of the challenge, Virginia Urology hosted a 5k Run/1 Mile Walk and a health fair. This challenge was designed to raise awareness of early detection and funds for prostate cancer research. This event proved to be a huge success with almost 400 participants, $100,000 raised and 100 men screened for prostate cancer. We hope you will join us this again this year to make the 2009 challenge another success!

Did you know?

  • Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S. today
  • Prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in men
  • 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer -- as compared to 1 in 7 women with breast cancer
  • Prostate cancer is more 2.5 times as deadly for African-American men than Caucasian men
  • In 2008:
    • 745, 000 new cancer cases in men (all sites)
    • 25% (186,000) men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer
  • One new case is diagnosed every 3 minutes

There is a 99% five year survival rate if detected early!

This year the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge is to have one million people "click" to learn more about prostate cancer. We have launched a radio campaign with Cox Radio aimed at reaching the Richmond and surrounding areas encouraging listeners to go to MillionClicksRichmond.com to learn more. Virginia Urology has been joined by Lexus of Richmond to get the word out about prostate cancer.

In addition to the radio campaign, we will be out at Independence Golf Club and Hunting Hawk Golf Club in September to provide information on prostate cancer and prostate screenings. In addition, there will be cars to test drive and giveaways so please challenge your father, husband, brother or son to a round of golf!
