Vasectomy reversal is an outpatient surgery that reestablishes a connection between the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles into the semen. After successful vasectomy reversal, sperm are present and you may be able to get your partner pregnant. Men decide to have a vasectomy reversal for several reasons, including change in family situation, remarriage, etc. Vasectomy reversal can be attempted even if several years have passed since the original vasectomy — but the longer it’s been, the less likely it is to work. A small number of men have a vasectomy reversal to treat testicular pain that may be linked to prior vasectomy.
Vasectomy reversal is the most cost-effective option in most circumstances to restore fertility in men who have had prior vasectomy. Other methods, such as in-vitro fertilization are significant more costly. All options will be discussed in detail at the time of consultation so that you may make an informed decision.
At your Virginia Urology appointment, you will meet with Dr. Jason Szobota or Dr. Joseph Ellen, our urologists specializing in reversal techniques for consultation and examination. You and your partner will have the opportunity to have your questions answered regarding the likelihood of restoring your fertility and complications of the procedure. During the consultation, the procedure will be discussed in detail. The final cost of the procedure is quoted/confirmed on the day of your consultation with the physician. Vasectomy reversal is not covered under most insurance plans.
The procedure is performed at our outpatient surgical center with general anesthesia. You will go home postoperatively without an overnight stay. Recovery from surgery will be covered in your consultation as well. Cryopreservation of sperm is optional during a vasectomy reversal. This allows for preservation of sperm for future use if the reversal is unsuccessful.
