Got Stones? Kidney Stone Hotline Available

When you need us the most we are there for you 24/7!  The physicians and staff of Virginia Urology understand that kidney stones are painful.  The Kidney Stone Hotline is a resource to assist you when experiencing the symptoms of a kidney stone. The hotline is available 24/7 by calling 804-560-7866.  When you call this number, a Virginia Urology staff member will coordinate appropriate care. (Please note: To ensure your safety and provide quality care, our physicians do not prescribe pain medications (i.e., narcotics) over the telephone. If it is necessary to control pain after hours, then you may be directed to a local emergency room and given a follow-up appointment in our office the next business day.)

Our Stony Point office is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging that includes x-ray and CT scan to assist in diagnosing your stone.  We also have a board certified radiologist on site that specializes in urologic radiology.  In addition, this location has a fully accredited outpatient surgery center should surgical treatment be needed.  Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy - a minimally invasive procedure used to treat kidney stones is available Monday - Friday at this site so you do not have to wait weeks for treatment.

Hopefully, you will not have the unfortunate experience of a painful kidney stone attack. But if you do, the experienced physicians and staff at Virginia Urology are here to help by offering you rapid care with the convenience of all these services being available at one location.

Kidney stones are always prevalent during warmer weather, so remember to drink plenty of water!

June is Men's Health Month

Men's Health Month is designed to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men.

There is an ongoing, increasing and predominantly silent crisis in the health and well-being of men.  Furthermore, over half of premature deaths among men are preventable.  This is often because men ignore health symptoms, and put off seeing a physician until they start having severe problems.  So this month, take some time for yourself and be proactive about your health! I Be sure that you have an annual physicial that examines your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA).  These numbers will create a baseline for you to continue to monitor over time with your physician.  The Men's Wellness Center at Virginia Urology provides these preventative screenings and specialty clinics to ensure you receive a full continuum of care in one convenient location.

Urology Mission Work

Virginia Urology physicians' Robert Brown, M.D. and Kent Rollins, M.D. traveled to St. Vincent with the International Hospital for Children (IHC) team for a week long surgical mission in February.  This team was made up of those volunteering their plastic surgery, ophthalmology and urology expertise to those in need.  Both Drs. Brown and Rollins have been traveling to St. Vincent each year for this mission long before the IHC was even formed.   Their devotion to the children of the Caribbean is longstanding and they are welcomed each year with open arms by the staff at Milton Cato Hospital.  In total, 101 children received screenings with 34 of those children receiving surgical treatment.

Dr. Glazier and his Vietnamese ColleaguesDavid Glazier, M.D. recently dedicated his time, resources and surgical skills to travel with the International Organization for Women and Development (IOWD) to Niger and Hanoi, Vietnam.  The IOWD provides surgical knowledge and medical resources to these developing countries for repair of fistulas, an abnormal opening between internal organs often resulting in permanent incontinence.  Dr. Glazier and his colleagues train the native country physicians on how to repair the fistulas so that they are able to relieve these women of the discomfort and embarrassment associated with this condition.  Dr. Glazier will be traveling to Rwanda in October to continue his mission of teaching and healing to those in need.

If you would like to learn more or how you may be able to help these organizations, then please visit their sites for further information: International Hospital for Children or the International Organization for Women and Development
